Students and community members were invited to a screening of Evil Does Not Exist on
March 25 at 7 pm in Atwood Little Theater.
Directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, the 2023 Japanese film was presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Over the past 15 years, director Hamaguchi has developed a deeply original and critically acclaimed body of work, earning him recognition at major international film festivals.
His latest film, Evil Does Not Exist, continues this trajectory, earning a Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2023. The film follows Takumi, a quiet widower, and his spirited daughter Hana as they live in the rural mountain of Mizubiki. Takumi and Hana carry deep
wounds tied to their family’s tragic past, but they remain connected to the world around them. As their lives unfold, the film explores themes of grief, resilience, and the balance of humanity and nature.
The film is deliberately slow, pacing itself to create emotional depth. Evil Does Not Exist offered watchers an experience to reflect on the tensions between modern life and their environmen
