Colorful threads, embroidery hoops, and conversation filled the LGBT Resource Center on September 23 as students gathered for an afternoon of creativity at St. Cloud State University.
The latest Craftnoon session, held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Atwood Memorial Center, invited students to explore embroidery in a relaxed and welcoming setting. Tables were filled with colorful thread, fabric, embroidery hoops, patterns, and other supplies, allowing students to choose their own designs and work at their own pace.
For some participants, embroidery was already a familiar hobby, while others were trying it for the first time. Throughout the afternoon, students practiced different stitches, experimented with color combinations, and helped one another as their designs began to take shape.
The event was about more than simply completing a craft. It also created an opportunity for students to step away from their usual academic routines, spend time with others, and enjoy a hands-on activity in a comfortable environment. Conversations developed naturally
around the table as participants shared materials, compared their work, and exchanged ideas.
The relaxed atmosphere made the experience approachable for students of all skill levels. There was no pressure to create a perfect finished piece. Instead, participants could focus on learning something new, expressing their creativity, and enjoying the process.
As part of the university’s ongoing Craftnoon series, the embroidery session offered another way for students to connect through creative activities on campus. Each session features a different project, giving students the chance to explore new interests while building community.
By the end of the afternoon, colorful strands of thread and works in progress remained across the tables, reflecting two hours spent creating, learning, and connecting. The September 23 Craftnoon showed how a simple creative activity can provide students with a
meaningful break in the middle of a busy semester.
